The channels play perfectly, but the guide is blank, stuck on yesterday, or shows every program a few hours out. IPTV EPG not working is a different kind of problem from a broken stream, because the program guide is a separate data feed from the video. The video can be perfect while the guide fails.
EPG stands for electronic program guide: the grid of what is on now and next. This guide starts with what the symptom tells you, then works through the fixes from most likely to least likely. For background, read what an EPG is and how it works; this post assumes you have one set up and it is misbehaving.
What IPTV EPG not working tells you
Match what you see to one of these patterns before changing anything.
- Guide is empty on every channel: the player has no EPG source at all, the EPG URL is wrong, or the download failed. Start at Step 1.
- Guide is filled but stale: the player loaded data once and has not refreshed it. Start at Step 2.
- Programs show at the wrong time, usually by whole hours: a time zone offset or a wrong device clock. Go to Step 3.
- Guide works on some channels only: playlist channel IDs do not match the guide data, or the provider has no data for those channels. Go to Steps 4 and 6.
- Guide broke after a playlist change or app update: cached data is out of step. Go to Step 5.
Step 1: Check that the EPG URL is present and correct
How guide data arrives depends on how you logged in. With an Xtream Codes login (server URL, username and password), most players fetch the guide automatically from the same server. With an M3U playlist link, the guide is a separate feed, and you need to enter an EPG URL in the player’s settings; providers usually supply it in the activation email. The most common cause of IPTV EPG not working with an M3U playlist is simply an empty EPG field.
Open the playlist settings in your player and look for the EPG, guide or XMLTV source. Then:
- If the field is empty and you are using an M3U link, paste the EPG URL from your activation email.
- If it is filled, compare it character by character with the newest email, because server addresses can change and an old EPG URL may point at a server that no longer answers.
- If you use an Xtream login and the field is empty, that may be normal; look for an option such as EPG from provider or automatic and make sure it is on.
Save, then force an update as described in Step 2. If the guide fills, the URL was missing or wrong, and nothing else was broken. The IPTVOID setup guide shows where this field sits in the common apps.
Step 2: Force a guide update and check the interval
Guide data is downloaded on a schedule, not streamed. The player grabs a file covering the next several days and refreshes it after a set interval. If that interval is too long, or the player was closed when the refresh was due, the guide goes stale and shows yesterday’s programs. Stale data is the most visible form of IPTV EPG not working, and the easiest to fix.
Look for an update EPG, reload guide or refresh option. In TiviMate, the EPG settings hold both a manual update and an update interval; in Kodi, the PVR and live TV settings can clear guide data, which forces a fresh download. Run a manual update and give it a minute or two, because a full guide takes time to parse on a slow device.
If the guide fills after a manual update, the schedule was the problem: set the interval to once a day or shorter and turn on any update-on-launch option. If a manual update does nothing, the URL from Step 1 or the cache from Step 5 is more likely.
Step 3: Wrong times: time zone offset and device clock
If every program shows at the wrong time by a whole number of hours, no data is missing; the player is placing it on the wrong part of the timeline. Two things cause this wrong-time version of IPTV EPG not working.
The device clock
Check the device’s time and date in its system settings, set them to automatic, and confirm the time zone. A stick set up in another country, or a TV unplugged for weeks, often has a wrong zone, and the guide is the first thing to show it.
The player’s time shift setting
Most players have an EPG time offset or time shift setting, usually in hours, because some providers publish guide data in their own time zone. If your clock is right and the guide is still out by, say, two hours, set the offset to correct it and reload. If that fixes it, the provider’s data is simply in a different zone, which is common and harmless. Check it again when daylight saving time changes.
Step 4: Guide works on some channels only: tvg-id mismatch
This is the hardest symptom to understand and the most common for M3U users. An M3U playlist is plain text: an #EXTM3U line at the top, then an #EXTINF line for each channel, followed by the stream URL. One #EXTINF attribute is tvg-id, a label that tells the player which guide entry belongs to this channel; the guide file uses the same label on its side.
If the tvg-id in the playlist does not exactly match the channel ID in the guide data, the player cannot pair them, and the channel shows no information even though the data exists. Spelling, capitalization and suffixes all matter: bbcone.uk will not match BBCOne.uk or bbc1.uk.
What you can do:
- Use the provider’s own EPG URL rather than a third-party guide, because it uses the same IDs as the provider’s playlist.
- In players that allow it, including TiviMate, open the channel’s settings and pick the guide entry for that channel manually.
- If the mismatch is widespread, tell your provider which channels are affected so they can correct the IDs on their side.
If mapping one channel manually fixes it, you have confirmed an ID mismatch. The M3U playlist guide explains the format if you want to read the raw lines yourself.
Step 5: Clear the cache and reload the playlist
Players store guide data locally so the grid opens instantly. When that copy is corrupt, or the playlist changed and the old guide no longer lines up, clearing it forces a clean download.
- In the player, look for a clear EPG data, clear cache or reset guide option, and use it.
- If the app has no such option, clear its cache from the device’s app settings. Clearing cache keeps your playlist; clearing data removes it, so choose cache first.
- Restart the app and run a manual guide update.
If the guide returns after a cache clear, the data was never missing; a stale local copy was in the way. This also fixes the common case of IPTV EPG not working right after an app update, when the new version cannot read the old version’s stored guide.
Step 6: IPTV EPG not working because of provider-side guide gaps
Sometimes the guide is empty because there is no data for that channel anywhere. Providers build guide data from many sources, and small, regional or newly added channels often have none. You cannot fix this in your player, and it varies a great deal between services.
How to tell: the same channel is blank in two different players, with the provider’s own EPG URL, after a cache clear and update, while neighboring channels are full. Report it with the channel names, your player, and whether you use Xtream details or an M3U link. IPTVOID support is available 24/7 by WhatsApp and email via the contact page.
If the guide is empty for every channel and the video fails too, you have a wider issue, and the general IPTV troubleshooting guide is the place to start.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my IPTV guide say no information?
Either the player has no guide source, the download failed, or the channel’s ID does not match anything in the guide data. Check the EPG URL, force a manual update, then compare a working channel with a broken one.
Why is my EPG a few hours off?
Either the device clock or time zone is wrong, or the provider publishes guide data in a different time zone. Fix the device clock first, then use the player’s EPG time offset setting to correct what remains.
Do I need an EPG URL with an Xtream Codes login?
Usually not. Most players fetch the guide automatically from the same server when you log in with a server URL, username and password. A separate EPG URL is mainly for M3U playlists, though some providers supply one you can add as a backup.
The bottom line on IPTV EPG not working
Guide data and video are two separate feeds, so IPTV EPG not working rarely means anything is wrong with the service itself. In most cases the EPG URL is missing or outdated, the update interval is too long, the clock or time zone is off, the tvg-id labels do not match, or cached data is in the way. Only a genuine gap in the provider’s data needs a message to support.
If you are testing a new service, check the guide as carefully as the channels; a long channel list alone does not tell you how a service will work for you. IPTVOID’s 24-hour free trial with no credit card gives you time to load the guide on your own device, check that the times line up, and see how complete it is for the channels you watch.
